Overview

  • Kedarkantha is a very popular winter trek, the highest point is at ~12,500 feet and the trekkers need to cover ~10km to reach the summit. Mythollogically the trek is related the Lord Shiva and is believed to to be he place where Lord Shiva used to meditate befor moving to Kedarnath
  • It takes 2-3 days to complete the trek tarting from Sankri and 4-5 days staring from Dehradun. The most popular base village is Sankri, but can be started from multiple others villages including Kotgaon, Ludrala, Devjani and others
  • Trekkers need to reach the base village and it takes approximately 8-10 hours to reach any of the base villages from Dehradun. Best time to do the trek is from End of December to Mid of March, as trekkers experience the bulk of snow

●       Estimated time for trekking is 3-4 hours. Retire to your tents to lodge off your bags and enjoy the surrounding. Please do not sleep on arrival as you may get headache and feel lethargic.

●       Play board games, make your snow man and engage in some group activity. As part of SHRAMDAAN you can help in collecting the plastic garbage in the surrounding to bring it back for proper disposal.

Facilities

Inclusions:

  • Accommodation: All accommodation on the trek will be on triple sharing basis in Tents.

  • Trek Leader and Guides: A team of an experienced and certified Trek Leader, as well as a professional guide, will accompany you for the trek.

  • Services of a Professional Trekking Team: A team of an experienced Cook, Camp Staff, Porters/Mules will accompany you for all the arrangements on the trek.

  • Meals: All Meals on the Trek are included. We will serve Vegetarian Indian food on the trek which will be cooked by our high-altitude chefs. It will be a five meal plan including Morning Tea, Breakfast, Lunch, Snacks and Dinner. You will be provided with clean mountain water from the streams to drink. Fruits and munchies will be provided during trek at regular interval as and when desired. Item requiring cooking will be only provided at campsite or in lunch boxes

  • Trekking and Safety Equipment: All the camping equipment such as Tents, Sleeping bags, Toilet Tents, Dining Tent, sleeping mat, and other things will be provided by us and we guarantee the quality. Medical kit will be provided by us. Certain safety gears are available on rental.

  • Permits and Forest Camping Charges: Only for Indian Clients, All the applicable trekking permits, Camping Charges, Forest Entry Fee etc will be paid by us. Foreigners have to pay these charges if not mentioned.

Exclusion

  • GST and Other Taxes: Taxes is not included in the price mentioned with the trek. They will be charged as per actual if applicable. They are subjected to be charged according to government rules of India.

  • Food During Transit: Food during transit is not included in the package. We can recommend a few good options.

  • Flights and Transportation: Flights or other means of transport is not included in the package unless included in package. Transportation from home to designated pickup point and vice versa is not included in the package. We can arrange a cab for you according to your requirements but you will be liable to pay for the same. Any expenses occurred during the journey are not included in the package cost.

  • Personal Trekking Equipment: Your Rucksack, personal clothing, shoes, trek poles (We provide wooden trekking sticks of good Quality), and other personal trekking gear is not included in this package. You have to bring your own gear according to that weather and difficulty of the trek or you can ask us for renting the gears.

  • Portage of Personal Bags (Offloading): We highly advise you to carry your own burden (your rucksack) but due to any reason if you wish to not carry your rucksack, we can arrange for a porter/mule to carry it. For this service, you will be charged over and above the trek cost. The charges for offloading vary and may cost between INR 300 per day per bag (upto 10 kg) INR 1,000 per day for a mule to carry upto 30 kg of load.

  • Travel Insurance: Travel Insurance is not included in this package. We recommend you to have travel insurance before opting for such adventures.

  • Personal Expenses: Any personal expenses incurred (laundry, Bottled Water, Beverages, snacks, orders tea houses or dhabas, Tips for guides etc) are not included in the package.

  • Emergency Expenses: Any costs arising out of unforeseen circumstances such as accidents, bad weather, landslides, road conditions and any other circumstances beyond our control are not included in the package.

  • Anything not mentioned in Inclusions of the package.

How to Reach Sankri

  • Sankri is 8-10 hour drive from Dehradun and option for public transport is available. Three buses leave Dehradun for Sankri every day. Buses leave at 5:30am (near Prince chowk), 7:30am (near Prince Chowk) and 8:00am (Mussorie bus stand)
  • Alternatively, one can also take a bus or shared taxi to Purola or Mori and from there take a shared taxi to Sankri. Buses and shared taxis are easily available for Sankri, Purola and Mori between 5:30am in the morning to 10:00am in the morning
  • Or you can book a private taxi or take a package from Dehradun

  • Most popular trek during winters, with lot of snow
  • Easily available, not very expensive, easy to reach, local vendors available
  • Fully motorable road till the base village od Sankri
  • Good if prior trekking experience is there, our guide says if you can walk 3km in an hour you can do it

  • Not a technical trek, easy gradient (steep near the summit), lesser chances of mountain sickness if done with proper acclimatization

Kedarkantha trek mainly starts from Sankri, but you can also do it from Kotgaon, Devjani and other neighbouring villages. You can also start from any of these villages and end you trek at any village. Sankri is the most popular starting point and has maximum facilities in terms of operational requirement.

  • Kedarkantha trek starts from INR 3,000 but comes with bare minimum facilities. Average packages offering at INR 4,000-4,500 are best as they cover basic gears, washroom facilities, camping, guide and others.
  • Price may add up depending on facilities added up such as gear quality, type of tent facilites, tent sharing options, washroom quality, food options, and multiple other additionals.
  • A complete package at the cost of INR 6,000 (Sankri to Sankri) covers every requirement including snow pikes, gaiters, decathlon snow boots, decathlon snow jackets (rated minus 10 or lower), trekpole, and headlamp.

Kedarkantha trek is 20km long from Sankri village.

Trekkers generally do 5km uphill trek on day 2 and another 3km uphill trek on day 3 and 2km uphill trek and 10km downhill trek on day4.

  • Weather during Kedarkantha trek depends on the time of the year and location of the camp and where trekkers are during trek. It is generally pleasant cold in summers at Sankri and base camps, but chilly at the top. During winters it is super cold in Sankri and base camp during day and icy-cold during nights; summit is super cold all the time during the winters and one can expect high speed winds which will create a chill effect further loweriing the temperature (in range of minus 15 to 20 degree celsius)

  • View during the Kedarkantha trek is depended on the route selected. If we start from Sankri, we will pass through the local farms. It will offer a green forest view and peaks of the mountain. There will be mix of greenery, trees, and grassy lands

  • Kedarkantha peak is approximately ~12,500 feet above sea level.
  • Kedarkantha starts receiving snow at the start to mid of December and one can expect to see snow till the end of March to mid of April
  • Maximum volume of snow is available from last week of December to end of February.
  • Sankri is approximately 200 km from Dehradun and it takes 8 to 10 hours to reach Sankri from Dehradun depending on mode of transport selected.
  • Only JIO and BSNL mobile networks are operations at the base village of ankri.
  • During the trek one can find broken signal from JIO
  • At summit all networks work fine
  • During the trek all of the operators provide tent facilities for stay
  • At Sankri, hotels, dormitories, and camps are available for stay
  • It depends on the weather condition
  • Generally it is recommended for people in the age group of 15-60 years. But if you are physically active anybody can try during summers. Not recommended for yYoung kids below 15 years and people older than 55-60 years during snow time in winters
  • We generally don’t recommend to hurry in case of small children and elderly grandparents and recommend to do the trek in 6 days 5 nights. It do adds to the cost of the trek, but they and supporting guardians/caretakers will also feel relieved.
  • Yes, kids above 15 years can easily do the trek. Kids lower than 15 years can try during summers (May, June, September, October, and mid November)
  • We recommend to do it in 6days 5 nights
  • We don’t recommend to do the trek on ponies
  • We recommend all trekkers to carry water bottles and refill at every available mountain water filling point. Remaining hydrated is key to stay healthy and safe during trek and in general
  • No, It is not recommended if you are not a local. If you are planning to do it alone please take proper permissions from the forest department.
  • It depends on the time of trek
    • Tent (please make sure your tent is double layered), sleeping bag, sleeping mat, headlamp or battery operated light source, raincoat, cooking gears, trek pole/stick is always required

In winters you need to add good waterproof shoes, spikes for snow, snow jackets, wind suits as special gears

Dehradun railway station is at approximately 200km from base village of Sankrii

Dehradun airport is at approximately 230 km from base village of Sankri

  • Government clinic is available inSankri providing very basic medical facilities. Primary healthcare facility is available in Mori and Purola.
  • Few private dispensaries are also available providing basic health chekup and medicine. Ambulance facility is vailabe at Mori PHC
  • Nearest ATM (SBI, PNB and others) is available at Purola.

All vendors provide digital payment facility. We recommend all trekkers to carry cash in case of any emergency

As per trek analysts, Kedarkantha is moderate trek. However, in snowy winters it may get tricky and check your endurance

  • No, there is no electricity facility available at base camp. However, few vendors have solar panel facility to provide basic lightning facility.
  • It is recommended to carry power banks for charging ones mobile or other electronics devices
  • If you can walk 3km in one hour or 20km in day, you can do Kedarkantha trek

No, currently paid parking is not available at Sankri, however you can park near the offices of the most of the local vendors.
